Mariame Clément’s production focuses not only on the tragic love story between Violetta and Alfredo, but also on the social structures that shape their lives. Violetta’s downfall is thus portrayed as more than a private tragedy: it holds up a mirror to a society whose moral codes leave no room for her freedom or her love.
