Karl Wiedemann

After completing his secondary education, Karl Wiedemann found his way into the theater world through an apprenticeship as an event technology specialist at the Staatstheater Mainz. During his time in Mainz, he discovered an interest in the artistic use of lighting and the emotional impact that light and set design can evoke.
Following his training, his interests led him to the freelance market. There, he gained insight into the world of trade fairs and touring productions while also gathering his first experiences in lighting design through small-scale theater projects. After this foray into the freelance sector, Wiedemann returned to the theater.
While working at the Theater Koblenz, he attended master classes in lighting and stage technology. He also gained further experience in lighting design—particularly in dance—working on the ballet production 50° Nord / 7° Ost. Upon moving to the Landestheater Coburg, he added designs for productions such as the play Tombstone to his portfolio.
In 2014, Wiedemann took up the position of Master Electrician at the Staatstheater Nürnberg. There, he created lighting designs for productions by renowned directors such as Peter Konwitschny, Calixto Bieito, Josef Ernst Köpplinger, Mariame Clément, and Lorenzo Fioroni; he also collaborated with choreographer Goyo Montero on lighting for A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du printemps.
Since the 2020/2021 season, Karl Wiedemann has served as the Head of Lighting at the Saarländisches Staatstheater. This season, audiences can experience his lighting designs in productions such as Turandot, Tristan and Isolde, Carmen, and The Nutcracker.
